Find Your Gait Groove

“When walking is in harmony with your structural design, it becomes both beautiful and efficient”  Mary Bond - The New Rules of Posture
Our philosophy is that through the development of a heightened awareness of sensation and movement (mindfulness), we can become more efficient during our physical activities, and decrease the strain on our bodies, thereby preventing injuries, and aiding us in accomplishing our mission.  The goal of exercise is to reduce and relieve stress rather than increase it.  We promote body efficiency rather than body force.

In this workshop, you will:
*establish optimal alignment and support with a core foundation
*gain a working knowledge of the natural mechanics of gait
*walk / run efficiently
*increase distance / speed
*prevent injuries (achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, patello-femoral syndrome, iliotbial band syndrome, trochanteric bursitis)
*course and exercise summary provided
Whether you are a walker, a runner, or an aspiring runner, this workshop is for you!

Workshop Date:  Monday April 18, 2011
Workshop Time:     6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Fascial (Not FACIAL!) Fitness

Fascia is a whole body system, investing every cell of your body.  It is otherwise known as connective tissue (ie., collagen, elastin, and reticulin), and has been referred to as “THE ORGAN OF SUPPORT
We are still discovering the function of this important tissue, as well as it’s importance down to a cellular level.
Physiotherapist, Kris Desjardins, has studied with a pioneer in the field, Tom Myers, author of Anatomy Trains, Myofascial Meridians.
A few facts-
-fascia is a mechanical system, conveying and responsive to tension and compression
-in areas of the body that are braced, or collapsed, fascial tension is less than ideal
-in these areas, function is altered down to a cellular level
-optimal tension promotes cellular metabolism, and health, and therefore holistic health and well being
-the body is a tensegrity system meaning that it’s structural integrity depends on a balance of tensional forces (rather than a compressional system)
In this workshop, you will learn real-life applications of the above facts in order to attain  & maintain the ultimate Balanced Body.

Back Pain - A New Approach to an OLD Problem

Back pain often has it’s roots in dysfunctional posture and movement. In this informative workshop, you will begin to understand what you can do to help yourself.  Instruction will be provided in establishing postural support, and altering common habitual movement patterns.
Traditional treatment often focuses on passive decompression, and strengthening with a focus on concentric (shortening) muscle work.  We will present a framework whereby the spine is a central pole, and surrounding myofascia is a series of guy wires.  Establishing appropriate length and tension is therefore key in active decompression, pain relief, and the prevention of future episodes of back pain.
